Train hard. Train safely. Respect the space. Respect the people in it.
These Gym Rules are designed to help everyone enjoy HP29, train safely and make the most of the facility.
They apply to everyone using HP29, including members, guests, trial users, Personal Training clients, Small Group Personal Training clients, participants in Training Sessions and anyone attending a specific children’s or youth session.
These Gym Rules should be read alongside the HP29 Membership Agreement, HP29 Liability & Exercise Participation Waiver, HP29 Pre-Exercise Health Screening & Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) and HP29 Privacy Notice, where applicable.
1. ACCESS TO HP29
- You must have a valid membership, booking, trial, Personal Training appointment, Small Group Personal Training appointment or other authorised access arrangement to use HP29.
- You must check in using the HP29 check-in system when you arrive.
- You must only use areas, equipment and sessions that your membership or booking permits.
- Please follow reasonable instructions given by HP29 staff, Personal Trainers or instructors.
- Do not allow another person to use your membership, account, access credentials or check-in details.
- HP29 reserves the right to refuse or restrict access where there is a legitimate health, safety, behavioural or operational reason to do so, in accordance with the Membership Agreement.
2. AGE REQUIREMENTS
The minimum age for general HP29 membership is 16.
Members aged 16–17
Members under 18:
- must have appropriate parent/guardian consent;
- must have a parent/guardian involved in their membership arrangements as required by HP29;
- may use Open Gym from age 16, subject to the supervision requirements set by HP29;
- must have appropriate supervision from a parent/guardian when using Open Gym;
- must follow all HP29 rules and staff instructions.
Under-18s may participate in Personal Training where the Personal Trainer has the appropriate qualifications, insurance and experience to train someone of that age.
Under 16s
Under-16s cannot use Open Gym or general HP29 membership facilities.
They may only attend HP29 as part of a specific children’s or youth Training Session designed and authorised for their age group.
Children attending such sessions must follow the requirements communicated for that session.
3. BOOKING AND ATTENDING SESSIONS
Where a session requires a booking:
- You must book through the approved HP29 booking system.
- Only book sessions you genuinely intend to attend.
- If you can no longer attend, please cancel your booking as soon as possible.
- Do not attend a session using another member’s booking or account.
- Do not deliberately book spaces you do not intend to use.
- Session capacity limits must be respected.
- You may only participate in a Training Session if you are appropriately booked or otherwise authorised to attend.
Booking, cancellation and membership access arrangements are governed by the current HP29 booking system and Membership Agreement.
4. OPEN GYM
Open Gym is intended for independent exercise within a supervised environment.
During Open Gym:
- You are responsible for choosing exercises appropriate to your ability and experience.
- Staff may provide general assistance or safety guidance, but Open Gym is not a Personal Training session.
- If you are unsure how to use a piece of equipment, ask a member of staff before using it.
- Do not attempt exercises or use equipment beyond your current ability simply because another member is doing so.
- Respect other members’ space and allow appropriate time for equipment sharing.
- Keep walkways, entrances, exits and access routes clear.
5. TRAINING SESSIONS
Training Sessions are coach/instructor-led sessions.
Participants are expected to:
- arrive prepared and ready to train;
- follow reasonable instructions from the coach or instructor;
- work at an appropriate level for their own ability;
- tell the coach about any relevant injury, illness or limitation before the session;
- use equipment as instructed;
- respect other participants;
- stop or modify an exercise if instructed to do so for safety reasons.
If you are unsure about an exercise or movement, ask.
There is no prize for being the person who pushes through an exercise that isn’t right for them.
6. PERSONAL TRAINERS, COACHES & PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
HP29 may have a number of Personal Trainers, coaches and other fitness professionals working within the facility. This allows members to access a range of training services while maintaining a professional and safe environment.
Authorised Trainers and Coaches
- Only Personal Trainers, coaches and fitness professionals who have been authorised by HP29 may provide paid coaching or Personal Training services within the facility.
- Trainers and coaches must operate within their relevant qualifications, professional competence and insurance.
- Members must not provide paid Personal Training, coaching or exercise instruction to other members at HP29 unless they are specifically authorised to do so by HP29.
- Members may train together socially or assist one another informally, but must not present themselves as an HP29 Trainer or provide professional coaching without authorisation.
Respecting Training Sessions
- Members should not interrupt, distract or interfere with another person’s Personal Training or coached session.
- Please give Trainers and their clients appropriate space to work safely.
- Do not approach or attempt to recruit, solicit or sell services to another member while they are participating in a Personal Training or coached session.
- Trainers may provide general safety guidance to members using Open Gym where appropriate, but this does not turn Open Gym into a Personal Training session.
- Members participating in Personal Training or Small Group Personal Training must follow reasonable instructions given by their Trainer.
Working With Your Own Trainer
You are welcome to use an HP29-authorised Personal Trainer where your membership or booking arrangements allow.
Where a Trainer is operating independently or under a separate arrangement with HP29, there may be a separate agreement between you and that Trainer. Your Trainer is responsible for the services they provide to you, within the scope of their professional role.
HP29 may require Trainers to maintain appropriate qualifications, insurance and professional standards as a condition of working within the facility.
Professional Boundaries
HP29 is committed to maintaining a professional training environment.
Unwanted physical contact, inappropriate comments, sexual behaviour, harassment, intimidation or other conduct that crosses reasonable professional boundaries will not be tolerated.
Physical contact may sometimes be appropriate during exercise instruction, for example to assist with positioning, technique or safety. Trainers should communicate appropriately and obtain appropriate agreement before physical contact where reasonably practicable.
Any concern about inappropriate conduct should be reported to HP29 management.
7. PERSONAL TRAINING & SMALL GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING
Personal Training and Small Group Personal Training are coached services.
Your Trainer is responsible for delivering the service within their professional scope, but you remain responsible for communicating relevant information about your health, injuries, symptoms and ability to exercise.
Please tell your Trainer if:
- an exercise causes pain or unusual symptoms;
- your health or medication has changed;
- you have developed an injury or illness;
- you have received new medical or healthcare advice;
- you are unable to safely perform an exercise.
You must follow reasonable safety instructions given by your Trainer.
8. USING EQUIPMENT RESPONSIBLY
HP29 equipment is provided for appropriate training purposes.
Please:
- use equipment only for its intended purpose;
- check equipment before use and report anything damaged or unsafe;
- ask if you are unsure how to use something;
- use appropriate weights for your ability;
- keep equipment under control;
- return equipment after use;
- keep plates, dumbbells, kettlebells and other equipment in their designated storage areas;
- leave equipment in a safe condition for the next person.
Moving Equipment
Equipment may be moved where appropriate for your training.
If you move equipment:
Put it back when you’re finished.
Equipment must be returned to its designated or safe storage position so that it does not create a trip hazard, obstruct access or interfere with another member’s training.
9. DROPPING WEIGHTS
Do not deliberately drop weights.
Weights should be controlled and returned safely to the floor or storage area wherever reasonably possible.
This includes dumbbells, kettlebells, plates, bars and other equipment.
If equipment is specifically designed to be safely dropped in a particular training environment or exercise, follow the instructions of the Trainer or HP29 staff.
Repeated or inappropriate dropping of weights may be treated as misuse of equipment.
10. LIFTING AND ADVANCED EXERCISES
HP29 welcomes a wide range of training styles, including strength training and Olympic lifting.
You may perform advanced exercises where:
- you have the appropriate experience and ability;
- the exercise can be performed safely;
- there is sufficient space;
- the equipment is appropriate;
- you are not creating an unreasonable risk to yourself or others.
If you are unsure whether an exercise or setup is appropriate, ask a member of staff.
Train within your ability rather than trying to prove it.
11. CHALK AND OTHER TRAINING PRODUCTS
Chalk may be used where appropriate for training.
Please:
- use it sensibly;
- avoid unnecessary mess;
- clean up after yourself;
- do not leave chalk on equipment, floors or other surfaces.
The same principle applies to any other training product you bring into HP29.
If you make a mess, clean it up.
12. CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR
Please wear clothing that is appropriate for exercise and suitable for the activity you are undertaking.
Trainers are not compulsory, but footwear must be appropriate for the activity and environment.
For hygiene and safety reasons:
- heavily soiled outdoor footwear should not be worn;
- sliders, slippers or other inappropriate footwear should not be worn while exercising;
- footwear should provide an appropriate level of stability for the activity being performed.
Staff may ask you to change footwear or clothing if what you are wearing presents a reasonable safety or hygiene concern.
13. FOOD AND DRINKS
We don’t want to be unnecessarily fussy about what you bring into HP29.
Please simply use common sense.
- Keep drinks in suitable, secure containers.
- Take care around equipment and electrical items.
- Clean up any spills immediately.
- Food should not be consumed in a way that creates a hygiene, safety or mess issue.
- Protein shakes and similar drinks are permitted where used sensibly.
- Hot drinks may be consumed in appropriate areas, but should not be placed where they could spill onto equipment or create a hazard.
HP29’s coffee facilities may be used by members, Trainers and staff in accordance with any instructions provided.
14. HYGIENE AND CLEANLINESS
Please help us keep HP29 clean and pleasant for everyone.
- Wipe down equipment after use where appropriate.
- Use the cleaning products provided by HP29 as directed.
- Dispose of rubbish properly.
- Do not leave towels, clothing, bottles or personal belongings around the gym.
- Clean up chalk, sweat, drinks or other mess you create.
- Use appropriate personal hygiene when training.
If you notice a cleaning, hygiene or maintenance issue, please tell a member of staff.
15. SHARING EQUIPMENT & GYM ETIQUETTE
HP29 is a shared training environment.
Please:
- be considerate of other members;
- allow others to use equipment where appropriate;
- avoid unnecessarily occupying equipment while using your phone or taking extended breaks;
- don’t monopolise equipment during busy periods;
- ask before taking equipment someone is actively using;
- return equipment when finished;
- keep your training area tidy;
- give other people adequate space to exercise safely.
A simple “Are you using this?” goes a long way.
16. PHONES, PHOTOGRAPHY & FILMING
We understand that people like to track their training, create content and share their progress.
You may photograph or film yourself at HP29 provided that you respect other people’s privacy.
When filming yourself
- Do not deliberately film another member without their permission.
- Do not position your camera so that another person is clearly identifiable in the background without their permission.
- Do not film Personal Training or other sessions involving another client without appropriate permission.
- Do not record private conversations.
- Do not obstruct equipment, walkways or other members while filming.
- Keep filming reasonably proportionate to the space and circumstances.
HP29, Trainers and Instructors
HP29 staff and Trainers may photograph or film training activity for HP29’s social media, website, promotional material or other marketing purposes where the appropriate consent has been obtained.
Individual Trainers may also create content for their own professional social media or marketing where appropriate consent has been obtained.
If you do not wish to appear in HP29 or Trainer marketing content, please follow the relevant consent/opt-out process.
17. PERSONAL BELONGINGS
Please take reasonable care of your belongings.
- Do not leave valuables unattended.
- Use designated storage where available.
- Do not leave bags or other belongings where they obstruct walkways or equipment.
- HP29 is not responsible for loss or theft except where legally responsible.
If you find something belonging to another member, please hand it to a member of staff.
18. HEALTH, ILLNESS & INJURY
Please do not train if you are unwell in a way that could make exercise unsafe or put other people at unnecessary risk.
You must tell your Trainer or a member of staff about relevant:
- injuries;
- illnesses;
- symptoms;
- changes in medication;
- medical advice;
- physical limitations.
If you become unwell, dizzy, unusually breathless, experience chest pain, feel faint or experience another concerning symptom during exercise:
Stop exercising and tell a member of staff immediately.
Where appropriate, HP29 may recommend that you seek medical advice before continuing exercise.
19. RESPECT FOR OTHERS
HP29 is intended to be a welcoming environment for everyone.
We do not tolerate:
- bullying;
- harassment;
- intimidation;
- threatening behaviour;
- abusive or aggressive behaviour;
- discrimination;
- sexual harassment or unwanted sexual behaviour;
- deliberately inappropriate or offensive conduct;
- threatening, abusive or intimidating communication towards staff, Trainers or members.
Treat people with the same respect you expect from them.
Concerns should be reported to HP29 management as soon as reasonably possible.
20. DRUGS, ALCOHOL & IMPAIRMENT
You must not train at HP29 while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that materially impairs your ability to exercise safely or behave appropriately.
Staff may ask you to leave the facility if they reasonably believe you are impaired and your presence creates a safety or behavioural concern.
21. SAFETY & EMERGENCIES
Please familiarise yourself with the location of:
- emergency exits;
- fire exits;
- fire safety equipment;
- first aid equipment;
- any emergency communication points.
In an emergency:
1. Stop exercising.
2. Follow staff instructions.
3. Leave equipment safely where possible.
4. Evacuate using the designated route.
5. Do not re-enter the building until instructed that it is safe to do so.
Never obstruct fire exits, emergency routes or access to safety equipment.
22. DAMAGE & MAINTENANCE
If you notice damaged, faulty or unsafe equipment:
Do not use it. Tell us.
Do not attempt to repair gym equipment yourself unless specifically authorised to do so.
Members may be held responsible for damage caused by deliberate misuse, reckless behaviour or unreasonable use of equipment.
This does not mean you are responsible for normal wear and tear or accidental damage occurring through reasonable use.
23. FOLLOWING STAFF INSTRUCTIONS
HP29 staff, Trainers and instructors may give reasonable instructions relating to:
- safety;
- equipment use;
- session participation;
- capacity;
- behaviour;
- emergencies;
- cleanliness;
- the operation of the facility.
Members are expected to follow reasonable instructions.
If you disagree with an instruction, please raise the matter with HP29 management rather than continuing behaviour that has been identified as a safety or operational concern.
24. CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE
Children may only attend HP29 where specifically permitted as part of an authorised children’s or youth Training Session.
Children must:
- remain within the designated session;
- follow the instructions of the coach/instructor;
- comply with the relevant age and supervision requirements;
- not use equipment or areas outside the session unless specifically authorised.
Children are not permitted to use the general Open Gym facility.
25. KEEPING THE GYM WELCOMING
We want HP29 to be somewhere people genuinely enjoy training.
That means:
TRAIN HARD.
Challenge yourself and make the most of your training.
TRAIN SAFELY.
Know your limits, use equipment properly and ask when you’re unsure.
RESPECT THE SPACE.
Put your equipment away and leave things better than you found them.
RESPECT THE PEOPLE.
Give others space, be considerate and treat everyone as you’d expect to be treated.
26. BREACHES OF THE GYM RULES
Most issues can be resolved with a simple conversation or reminder.
However, HP29 may take further action where someone:
- repeatedly breaches these rules;
- deliberately ignores reasonable safety instructions;
- behaves aggressively or abusively;
- deliberately or recklessly damages equipment;
- creates a serious or ongoing safety risk;
- engages in harassment, discrimination or threatening behaviour;
- otherwise seriously breaches the Membership Agreement or these Gym Rules.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include:
- a verbal or written warning;
- being asked to modify or stop a particular activity;
- removal from a Training Session;
- restriction of access;
- suspension of membership; or
- termination of membership,
in accordance with the HP29 Membership Agreement and applicable law.
Nothing in these Gym Rules limits any rights you have under applicable law.
27. CHANGES TO THE GYM RULES
HP29 may update these rules from time to time where reasonably necessary, for example because of:
- changes to the facility;
- new or replacement equipment;
- changes to services;
- health and safety considerations;
- changes to how the gym operates.
The current version will be made available to members.
Where a change materially affects your contractual rights or obligations, the relevant provisions of your Membership Agreement will apply.
28. MEMBER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
By using HP29, you acknowledge that you have been given access to these Gym Rules and agree to follow them as part of your use of the facility.
These rules should be read alongside your:
- HP29 Membership Agreement
- HP29 Liability & Exercise Participation Waiver
- HP29 Pre-Exercise Health Screening & Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)
- HP29 Privacy Notice
where applicable.
